Set: Props and furnishings to suggest the study of 221b Baker St.

Synopsis: Holmes and Watson must act fast to prevent the theft of a famous diamond and safeguard the economy of the Austrian Empire. But does Holmes mean to get shot
by Watson? Will the great detective survive?

Running time: Around 30 minutes (Caution! This is very dependent on your production.)

Notes: 'A challenge!' cried Mr Sherlock Holmes one evening. 'To pass this dreary evening, write me a play in one act.'
'Easy,' I replied, 'Concerning what?'
'Why, murder of course!' exclaimed the great detective. 'The challenge will be to set it here in Baker Street, with just two characters.'
'So far so good,' I ventured.
'But,' continued Holmes, his lean face peering ever closer into the fire, 'here is the rub. Within the action, one of us must appear to die. And the fate of the whole world must
rest upon a diamond.'
'A challenge, indeed,' I replied.
And so, that night, I did as Mr Holmes had asked.'

SAMPLE SCENE

Watson: How on Earth did the most precious diamond of modern times come to be in your desk drawer?

Holmes: I assure you there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. I stole it.

Watson: You?

Holmes: Yes. I would say, with some certainty, just thirty minutes before the Ambassador penned that
letter to me.

(Watson sits.)

Watson: Holmes, would it trouble you enormously to pour a very old friend a very stiff drink?

(Holmes pours a brandy from the bureaux and hands it to Watson.)

Watson: This really is too much. Why would you steal the diamond from the Austrian Embassy?

Holmes: To prevent its theft.

Watson: You stole the diamond to prevent it being stolen?

Holmes: Precisely. Better that the Great Mogul Diamond is safe in my drawer, than it falls prey to the plot that I have uncovered to steal it and plunge the whole of the Austrian
Empire into darkness.
