Set: Two simple sets; a club house bar and a bedroom.

Synopsis: In Lysistrata by Aristophanes, the women were trying to end the Peloponnesian War. In this case, it's their husbands' addiction to golf that's the problem, but the
method employed is the same (give or take the barricading of public buildings)!

Running time: Around 40 minutes (Caution! This is very dependent on your production.)

Notes: I had always wanted to adapt Aristphanes' 'Lysistrata' with a modern twist, however this was never going to be straightforward. In order for the modern women in the
play to appear as subjugated as their Ancient Greek counterparts, I set 'In The Rough' in the early 1970s, before women's liberation really took hold. It also means that a little
fun can be had with the costumes! The golf club, being the last bastion of the male chauvinist, seemed the ideal setting for the play and the characters
are, even now, hopefully ones that we'll all recognise.

SAMPLE SCENE

Stella: You’ve got a plan, haven’t you? I’d know that look anywhere. Is it something big?

Mo: It could change your life. Give you Bernard back, and not on a bloody rota system.

Stella: I’m all ears.

Mo: (To Angie) I knew that would get her attention. I know a way to tempt them back off the golf course.

Stella: What? We’ll never do it. They're much too clever for us. They've spent a lifetime getting the upper hand. Holding the purse strings, paying the mortgage. All we women
do once the children have gone is keep ourselves all prettied up for our men. We've become lovely ornaments with no real purpose. We sit around in our floral dresses and
fancy shoes, deciding which mascara to wear.

Mo: And those are just the things that will save us.

Angie: But how? What use can they be?

Mo: I promise you no man of ours will ever again raise a club in sport.

Stella: Because of a floral dress?

Mo: Never more will they gather at the nineteenth hole with their beer while we sit at home and paint our nails.

Angie: Just what have you got in mind, Mo? What are you plotting?

Mo: Nothing less than victory, Angie. Nothing less than victory. But first a question. How fed up are you with your men disappearing every other day to the golf course?

Stella: We've had enough, Mo. It’s 1977. Things are changing all over the country. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it any more.
