Set: The study of 221b Baker St.

Synopsis: The redoubtable Holmes is presented with a murder mystery that took place three weeks previously, hundreds of miles away.

Running time: Around 110 minutes (Caution! This is very dependent on your production.)

Notes: 'I consider Sherlock Holmes to be one of the greatest creations in literary history. So, I suppose it was only a matter of time before I wrote a full length play about him.

As the curtain falls for the interval, the audience actually have all the facts at their disposal to solve the crime and all the suspects are (with the arrival of Wilkes) present on
stage. Many groups have had much fun in letting their audience cast votes in the interval to indicate who they believe the murderer to be.'

First Produced: Fylde Coast Players, Lancs, 2008
Latest Production: Pagham Players, West Sussex, 2012

SAMPLE SCENE

Holmes: Perhaps if you had been more open with me, Mrs Bessom, there would be no need for this interrogation.

Watson: Holmes! I'm sure Mrs Bessom has never been short of frank with us.

Holmes: Indeed, Watson; but that candour failed you this morning, did it not, Mrs Bessom?

(Mrs Bessom turns away, afraid.)

Mrs Bessom: It did, sir.

Irene: What is the meaning of this, Mr Holmes? If you have a point to make against this poor woman, then make it now.

Holmes: Mrs Latham, if ever you have cause to visit me again, might I beg of you to leave the theatrics at the door? Mrs Bessom, you know Mallen Hall all too well, do you not?

Mrs Bessom: I do, sir, yes, but how could you know?

Holmes: (Paces to the window) Earlier this morning, as Mr Latham and I were locating the Hall in the map of Norfolk, you brought coffee for our guests.

Mrs Bessom: It was at your own request, sir.

Holmes: It was. And Doctor Watson then questioned you on the point of a family association with Norfolk.

Mrs Bessom: That's right sir, my sister. I was quite plain.

Holmes: You were plain to a point, Mrs Bessom, and no further. I then asked you if you were familiar with Mallen Hall. But your reply was strange.
